Ham House Gardens

Ham House is special - it is the only 17thhouse in Europe with its furnishings and decoration intact and unchanged from that period. It is a treasure trove. William Murray, a close associate of King Charles 1ststarted the Ham collection and helped the King to acquire works for his own world famous collection, featured recently at the Royal Academy.  Ham also contains the furniture and pictures purchased by his daughter Elizabeth Murray, Countess of Dysart in her own right and Duchess of Lauderdale, and the Duke himself in the 1670s. Nearly all the furniture and pictures listed in the inventory of 1683 are still in the house.

Many of our members have visited Ham several times, so we are arranging a special arts tour to concentrate on the great treasures of the Long Gallery, the Green Closet (of miniatures) the Queen’s Apartment and the closets of the Duke and Duchess – their personal reception rooms. We shall have the house to ourselves for this tour!
